The complete professional Chester Step Test resource
The Chester Step Test is a progressive, submaximal aerobic fitness assessment used to estimate cardiorespiratory capacity from the heart-rate response to stepping exercise. Developed by Professor Kevin Sykes, it provides a practical field-based option when direct laboratory measurement of VO₂max is not required.
Cartwright Fitness supports the test across protocol, software, equipment, research, training and practitioner competency.

What does the Chester Step Test measure?
The Chester Step Test estimates aerobic capacity, commonly expressed as estimated VO₂max in ml/kg/min. It does not directly measure respiratory gases.
The estimate is derived from the participant’s response to progressively increasing stepping workloads, particularly heart rate. Because the method is indirect, protocol adherence, appropriate equipment and consistent administration matter when results are used professionally.
At a glance
Type: submaximal field assessment
Primary output: estimated aerobic capacity / estimated VO₂max
Key response: exercise heart rate
Other input: perceived exertion (RPE)
Use: professional fitness and occupational assessment where appropriate
How the test works
The participant steps on and off a fixed-height step in time with an externally controlled rhythm. The workload increases progressively. Heart rate and perceived exertion are monitored, and the participant continues until the appropriate stopping criteria are reached.
The recorded response is then used to estimate aerobic capacity. The full procedure, stage structure and practitioner guidance are covered in the dedicated protocol resource.
Official software. Direct connection to the test’s creator.
Cartwright Fitness develops the official Chester Step Test software and works directly with Professor Kevin Sykes to support and continually improve the professional use of the test.
CST2 is the dedicated software route for organisations focused specifically on the Chester Step Test. Cartwright Assess extends that workflow across multiple fitness assessments.
Research, validation and appropriate interpretation
The Chester Step Test has been examined in peer-reviewed research, including validation work comparing predicted aerobic capacity with directly measured maximal oxygen uptake.
Our research section brings together the evidence, reliability considerations and important limitations of interpreting an indirect estimate. The goal is not to overstate what the test measures, but to help practitioners use it appropriately.
Interpret the result
Use the dedicated reference-data resource for context around estimated VO₂max results. Reference values can support interpretation, but they do not turn an estimated fitness result into a diagnosis.
Choose the right Chester Step Test route
I need to start testing: choose the Chester Step Test equipment range or complete test kit.
I already have equipment and need professional software: use CST2.
I want to try an individual calculation: use the free Chester Step Test calculator.
I need to train practitioners: use the practitioner programme or online training.
I need to demonstrate competency: use the practitioner competency assessment.
I need evidence or interpretation: use the research, validation and reference-data resources.
Beyond the Chester Step Test
Aerobic fitness is often only one part of a professional assessment programme. Organisations may also need strength, power, flexibility, body composition and other physical measurements.
Cartwright Assess provides the broader software layer around multi-assessment fitness measurement, while the free assessment hub connects practitioners to protocols, calculators and equipment across the wider site.
